Electricity production in Bulgaria increased by 3.18% year-on-year during the period from 1 January to 31 May 2026, reaching 18.34 TWh, according to data published by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO. Over the same timeframe, electricity consumption rose by 6.97% year-on-year to 18.04 TWh. With demand growing alongside supply, Bulgaria recorded net exports of 296 GWh in the first five months of the year.
Baseload generation lower as coal and nuclear output declines
Electricity generation from baseload power plants, including coal-fired and nuclear facilities, totaled 12.18 TWh over the January-to-May period. That figure represented a 10.4% decrease compared with the corresponding months of 2025. The decline occurred while overall production and consumption both increased during the same period.
Renewables expand across transmission and distribution connections
Renewable energy sources continued to increase their contribution to electricity generation in Bulgaria. Power production from RES connected to the transmission network rose by 14% to 1,622.9 GWh. Electricity generated from RES connected to the distribution network increased by 5.21%, reaching 1,594.7 GWh.
The figures show growth in both electricity production and demand in Bulgaria during the first five months of 2026, alongside continued expansion of renewable generation connected at both transmission and distribution levels.
