Bulgaria: Additional 647 MW in installed capacity to be added by 2027

According to the ten-year plan for the development of electricity transmission network, published by the Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, additional installed capacity of 647 MW will be added by 2027, increasing the country’s annual electricity production to 49,400 GWh.

The development plan also envisages that a total of 665 million euros will be invested in electricity transmission network in Bulgaria in the 2018-2027 period, of which some 76 million euros will be drawn from the EU funds.

Out of 647 MW of new installed capacity in the next ten years, renewable energy will be accounted for 401 MW. New wind farms will contribute to this amount with 141 MW of installed capacity, solar parks with 161 MW, small hydropower plants with 35 MW, while biomass power plants will add additional 64 MW of installed capacity.

At the same time, a total of 146 MW of new thermal power plant capacity should be added, while the reconstruction and modernization of two 1,000 MW reactors at nuclear power plant Kozloduy will increase the plant’s output by 100 MW.

Bulgaria’s annual electricity production in 2027 is estimated between 37,960 GWh and 40,510 GWh, which means that it should be entirely covered by domestic production.
