Bosnia and Herzegovina: Solar Agroland proposes 270 MW solar power plant near Bileca amidst community opposition

Solar Agroland, a local company, has submitted a request for a preliminary environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a 270 MW solar power plant in the vicinity of Bileca. The Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction, and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska (RS) confirmed the submission, noting that the proposed solar facility will cover 380 hectares in the southeastern part of Bileca and is expected to generate approximately 418,174 MWh of electricity annually.

However, the proposal has sparked significant local opposition, with nearly 1,000 Bileca residents signing an online petition against the project. Located in the sunny Herzegovina region, Bileca is currently experiencing a solar boom, with several solar power plant proposals emerging in recent years. In 2024, EFT completed a 60 MW solar project in the area, and other projects are in the pipeline, including Metod Energija RS’s planned 22.4 MW plant, Energy of the Future’s proposed 140 MW plant, and a 200 MW plant backed by a Chinese investor, Solar Win.
