ALPEX Reports Significant Year-on-Year Growth in December Electricity Trading

The Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) has announced a notable increase in its day-ahead electricity trading, with total volumes reaching 168.6 GWh in December 2025. This figure indicates a slight 1% decrease from the previous month but reflects a substantial 70.8% year-on-year growth, underscoring the exchange’s expanding role in the regional energy market.

Breaking down the traded volume, 110.2 GWh was allocated to the Kosovo bidding zone, while 99.4 GWh was designated for Albania. The average market clearing prices were reported at 123.23 euros/MWh for Albania and 124.35 euros/MWh for Kosovo, indicating competitive pricing dynamics within these zones.

The overall transaction value on ALPEX for December reached approximately 41.8 million euros, marking an impressive 39.8% increase compared to December 2024. This growth in transaction value reflects not only increased trading activity but also the rising importance of ALPEX as a platform for electricity trading in Southeast Europe.

Established in October 2020 by the Albanian transmission system operator OST, alongside its Kosovo counterpart KOSTT, ALPEX has been operationally significant since conducting its first auction in April 2023. Currently, the exchange boasts 36 active members, facilitating trade across both Albania and Kosovo’s bidding zones.

This surge in trading activity is pivotal as it highlights ALPEX’s increasing influence within regional energy markets, potentially attracting further investments and participation from various stakeholders involved in electricity generation and distribution.
