Vertical Gas Corridor Enhances Tariff Structure to Improve Energy Security

In a significant development for the energy landscape of Southeast Europe, gas transmission system operators from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine have finalized a new tariff structure for the Vertical Gas Corridor. This initiative, which has received backing from the European Commission, aims to enhance the corridor’s commercial viability while bolstering regional energy security.

The revised tariff model is set to take effect in October and is designed to improve the corridor’s competitiveness as a strategic gas route facilitating flows between southern and Central Europe. This initiative aligns with European Union regulations, reflecting a concerted effort to create a more integrated energy market in the region. The Vertical Gas Corridor was initially launched in 2016 by Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary to establish infrastructure supporting bidirectional gas transmission. The inclusion of Moldova and Ukraine in 2024 further enhances its strategic importance as an alternative supply route.

Under the newly established commercial framework, operators will introduce a broader array of capacity booking products. Starting from the 2026–2027 gas year, market participants will gain the ability to reserve transport capacity on various time scales including daily, monthly, quarterly, and annually. This flexibility is expected to benefit traders and suppliers significantly.

The new tariff design represents a proactive approach to making the corridor more appealing amid Europe’s ongoing efforts to diversify supply routes and mitigate geopolitical risks associated with energy supplies. Enhanced participation in this market is anticipated to lead to improved infrastructure utilization and overall market dynamics.

To facilitate a smooth transition during this period of change, operators are seeking approval from national regulators to maintain existing transport products until October 2026. This interim measure aims to ensure Ukraine’s supply security while gradually implementing the new system.

This agreement highlights Europe’s commitment to strengthening its south-to-north gas infrastructure, thereby expanding access to alternative energy sources. The Vertical Gas Corridor is becoming increasingly recognized as a critical component of the continent’s evolving gas architecture and long-term energy strategy.
