The renewable energy sector in Romania continues to gain momentum, highlighted by the recent financial closure of the Vacareni wind farm project. Developers have successfully secured a financing package worth €100 million, aimed at facilitating both the construction and operational phases of this significant utility-scale wind initiative. The project is being undertaken by BIG MEGA Renewable Energy, a collaboration between BIG Shopping Centers and MEGA OR Holdings.
This substantial financing was orchestrated through a consortium comprising both regional and international financial institutions. Key players in this arrangement include Erste Group Bank, Banca Comerciala Romana, Intesa Sanpaolo Romania, and Vseobecna uverova banka. Within this framework, Erste Group Bank has taken on the role of facility agent, while Banca Comerciala Romana is designated as the security agent.
Strategically located in Tulcea County, the Vacareni wind farm is designed to feature an installed capacity of 102 MW, utilizing 17 wind turbines. Notably, the project has achieved ready-to-build status, which allows for immediate commencement of construction without further delays related to permitting.
The securing of financing for Vacareni follows earlier investments directed towards the Urleasca wind farm, underscoring a strategic approach focused on disciplined execution and scalable growth within the renewable energy sector. Representatives from BIG MEGA Renewable Energy have indicated that this achievement reflects the group’s capability to attract long-term financing for large-scale renewable projects throughout the region.
In a related development, CJR Renewables, a Portuguese developer, recently completed construction on the Urleasca wind farm situated in Braila County. This facility also boasts an installed capacity of 102 MW and is projected to generate approximately 277 GWh of renewable electricity annually. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute significantly to carbon reduction efforts by offsetting around 115,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
