The Thermal Power Plant (TPP) Pljevlja in Montenegro has marked a significant advancement in its environmental strategy by commencing trial operations of its newly installed flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. This development follows a challenging installation period and signifies a crucial step towards modernizing the plant while minimizing its ecological impact.
As reported by the Montenegrin utility company EPCG, this FGD system is unprecedented in Montenegro and is integral to a comprehensive ecological renovation of TPP Pljevlja. The operational status of the system has led to a notable decrease in sulfur dioxide emissions, reflecting substantial progress in aligning with contemporary environmental regulations. Initial assessments reveal that emissions have plummeted to approximately 61 mg/m³, a dramatic reduction from 4,544 mg/m³ recorded in March 2025, and down from 3,249 mg/m³ following prior upgrades to the boiler and chimney in December 2025.
In the coming months, further adjustments to the FGD system are anticipated, alongside ongoing emissions monitoring. The goal is to ensure consistent long-term performance while adhering to stringent European environmental standards. EPCG has characterized the launch of this desulfurization technology as a pivotal moment for Montenegro’s electricity sector. Should current operational metrics be maintained, both sulfur and nitrogen oxide reduction systems at TPP Pljevlja are expected to comply with EU industrial emissions regulations.
The utility has committed to a transparent process regarding the remaining stages of the ecological reconstruction project, ensuring that stakeholders and the public remain informed as developments unfold. This initiative not only underscores Montenegro’s commitment to improving its energy infrastructure but also highlights broader regional efforts towards sustainable energy practices.
