In mid-January, the energy landscape in Europe revealed contrasting trends in solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy production. Notably, the German market experienced a significant rebound, with solar PV output surging by 77%, marking a recovery after two weeks of declines. The Italian market followed suit, witnessing a 7.1% increase. However, this positive momentum was not mirrored in the Iberian Peninsula or France, where solar production fell sharply. Specifically, Spain and Portugal reported decreases of 13% and 23%, respectively, while France faced a 14% decline, its second consecutive week of downturn.
Looking ahead to the week of January 19, forecasts by AleaSoft Energy indicate an anticipated rise in solar production for both Germany and Spain. Conversely, Italian solar PV output is projected to decrease during this period, suggesting a shift in regional dynamics.
The situation for wind energy is markedly different. During the week of January 12, there was a widespread decline across major European markets. Italy recorded the steepest drop at 56%, following four weeks of growth, while Spain experienced a substantial 52% decrease. France and Portugal also saw reductions of 11% and 20%, respectively. Germany’s decline was comparatively modest at 2.5%, continuing its trend of reduced output for the second week.
AleaSoft’s projections for the penultimate week of January suggest a potential recovery in wind energy production within the Iberian Peninsula and Italy. However, output in France and Germany is expected to continue its downward trajectory, extending the patterns observed previously.
