Slovenia is set to enhance its renewable energy capabilities with a significant upgrade of its only pump-storage hydropower facility, HPP Avce. Soske Elektrarne Nova Gorica (SENG), a subsidiary of HSE, has entered into an agreement with Japan’s Hitachi Mitsubishi Hydro Corporation (HM Hydro) to refurbish the plant’s generator. This initiative underscores Slovenia’s commitment to maintaining a robust green energy infrastructure.
The modernization project is slated to commence in 2027, with an estimated duration of seven months. The entirety of the financing will come from SENG’s own resources, reflecting a strategic investment aimed at ensuring the long-term stability and reliability of the facility. Specific financial terms related to the contract have not been publicly disclosed.
This refurbishment marks the second significant upgrade for HPP Avce, following an earlier overhaul completed between 2018 and 2019 that yielded impressive technical results. The forthcoming upgrade is intended to guarantee operational availability until the next major reconstruction, which is projected for summer 2036. This approach aims to extend the operational lifespan of the plant while enhancing its efficiency.
Since its commissioning in 2010, HPP Avce has played an integral role within Slovenia’s energy framework. It was one of Europe’s pioneering pump-storage facilities to incorporate variable speed technology in pumping mode, which has allowed for improved operational flexibility and efficiency in energy management.
As a cornerstone of Slovenia’s green energy strategy within the HSE Group, HPP Avce is crucial for balancing the electricity system. By storing excess electricity during periods of low demand and redistributing it when consumption peaks, the facility supports renewable energy integration and contributes significantly to Slovenia’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
