Slovenia electricity balance tightens on weaker hydro and higher demand in 2026

Between January and July 2026, power stations delivered 6,464.4 GWh to the transmission network, down 10.4% year on year. In the same period, electricity withdrawals rose by 2.7% to 6,439.2 GWh. The gap between supply deliveries and withdrawals reflects a tighter domestic balance as demand increased.

Hydropower and coal generation fall

The largest production decline came from hydropower. Slovenian hydro plants generated 1,726.1 GWh, which was less than 72% of output in the corresponding seven months of 2025. Coal-fired generation was also lower over the period.

The Sostanj thermal plant produced 796.6 GWh before its shutdown in April. That level represented a decline of more than 23% year on year.

Nuclear output steady while cooling conditions worsen

Nuclear generation provided the most stable major source of supply during January-July. The Krsko nuclear power plant generated 3,527.2 GWh through July, broadly unchanged versus the previous year. Its output was affected only after the reporting period.

After January-July, low water levels and high temperatures in the Sava river created difficult cooling conditions and led to temporary reductions in early August.

Gas generation rises as demand strengthens

Gas-fired generation moved in the opposite direction to hydro and coal. Ljubljana’s TE-TOL produced 394.6 GWh, more than 78% higher year on year, supported by the first complete January-July operating period for its new combined-cycle unit.

Brestanica, a gas-fired plant, increased generation by almost one-third to 20.4 GWh. By early August, it had already exceeded its production target for the full year.

Withdrawals rise across customer groups including pumped storage

Demand strengthened across principal customer groups during the first seven months of 2026. Distribution companies withdrew 5,600.7 GWh, up 2.6%, while direct consumers used 576.2 GWh, an increase of 3%. Pumped-storage demand also increased over the period.

The Avce pumped-storage hydropower plant consumed 262.4 GWh for pumping, 4.7% more than during January-July 2025. The combination of weaker hydro generation, reduced coal production and higher electricity consumption tightened Slovenia’s domestic balance.

Nuclear output stability and higher gas-fired generation partly offset the decline, but not enough to prevent greater reliance on cross-border supply during the period when domestic demand rose alongside weaker hydropower production and lower coal generation.
