Slovenia: Distributors to invest over €150 million in smart grid modernization by 2026

Slovenia’s five leading electricity distribution companies—Elektro Primorska, Elektro Ljubljana, Elektro Gorenjska, Elektro Celje, and Elektro Maribor—are set to invest more than €150 million by March 2026 to modernize the national electricity network and integrate smart grid technologies.

These companies, which operate the country’s regional electricity infrastructure under the coordination of system operator ELES, plan to construct approximately 1,300 kilometers of low-voltage lines and install 838 transformer stations equipped with advanced smart components.

A significant share of the investment, €71 million, is being funded through Slovenia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Through two public calls issued by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy, the companies secured €37.5 million and €33.5 million respectively to support their modernization projects.

Elektro Primorska will receive €11.4 million in NRRP funding, contributing to a total investment of about €21 million. Its plan includes building 204 kilometers of low-voltage network and installing 132 new transformer stations.

Elektro Ljubljana has been allocated €19 million from the NRRP and will invest a total of €40 million. The company aims to construct 373 kilometers of low-voltage lines and deploy 240 transformer stations.

Elektro Gorenjska will invest approximately €18.9 million—half of it funded by the NRRP—to upgrade 169 kilometers of low-voltage network and install or renovate 108 transformer stations.

Elektro Celje secured €15.1 million for a total investment of €28.5 million. Their project involves building 278 kilometers of low-voltage lines and 179 transformer stations.

Elektro Maribor received €16 million in funding to support total investments of €43.5 million, making it the largest project among the five. It includes the construction of 278 kilometers of low-voltage lines and the installation of 179 transformer stations.

Together, these projects aim to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of Slovenia’s electricity distribution system in line with national energy and climate goals.
