Bulgaria’s state gas supplier, Bulgargaz, has awarded a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tender to British energy company Shell. This procurement is part of an effort to enhance Bulgaria’s energy supply through imports delivered via a Turkish LNG terminal. The tender process commenced at the end of April, with 37 companies initially invited to participate, but ultimately five bids were submitted for consideration.
The winning bid from Shell involves the delivery of approximately 1 million MWh of LNG, which translates to around 95 million cubic meters of natural gas under standard conditions. This substantial volume is expected to assist in meeting Bulgaria’s summer gas demand, highlighting the country’s ongoing efforts to secure reliable energy sources as it navigates its energy landscape.
According to Bulgargaz, Shell’s proposal was deemed the most competitive and effectively met all tender specifications, allowing it to secure first place among the bidders. The LNG cargo will be sourced from the United States and is anticipated to arrive in the region by the end of May.
In addition to this recent procurement, Bulgargaz has also indicated that maintenance work at the LNG terminal near Alexandroupoli has been ongoing since early April. Following the completion of these maintenance activities, plans are in place for another LNG shipment that will be injected into the Chiren underground gas storage facility. This move is strategically aligned with preparations for the upcoming 2026–2027 winter heating season, ensuring Bulgaria’s energy security during peak demand periods.
