The second phase of the revitalization of Serbia’s Bajina Basta pumped-storage hydropower plant (HPP) is progressing smoothly, with equipment dismantling completed and testing currently underway. HPP Bajina Basta plays a vital role in the operations of Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) and the country’s national electricity grid. The refurbishment aims to enhance the plant’s efficiency and extend its operational lifespan by several decades.
This modernization project is the most significant initiative within EPS’s broader hydropower infrastructure renewal program. After the successful upgrade of the first generator, improvements in efficiency have already been observed, and similar results are anticipated for the second unit, which is currently undergoing renovation.
The lessons learned and experience gained from the Bajina Basta project are expected to be applied to future upgrades at other hydropower plants in Serbia, including the facilities at Vrla, Potpec, Bistrica, and the planned Djerdap 2 plant. Additionally, the project is setting a precedent for the construction of the new Bistrica pumped-storage facility.
As Serbia’s electricity systems continue to adapt to an increasing share of renewable energy sources, pumped-storage plants like Bajina Basta will become even more crucial for maintaining network stability, ensuring reliable energy supply and supporting grid balancing.
