Romgaz to enter natural gas supply market and expand internationally by 2025

Romania’s state-owned natural gas producer, Romgaz, is preparing to enter the natural gas supply market and expand its operations internationally, in line with new strategic goals set by the Ministry of Energy.

If all procurement and implementation plans proceed as expected, Romgaz plans to launch its first natural gas offers for residential and small non-residential consumers by 2025.

The Ministry of Energy has expressed strong support for Romgaz’s strategic move to supply natural gas to both residential and non-residential customers. This initiative is seen as crucial for Romania, as it addresses regional challenges while capitalizing on emerging opportunities. The project aims to provide competitively priced natural gas to as many Romanians as possible, strengthen national energy security, and support the digital transformation of the energy sector to meet future demands. Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja emphasized that this move allows Romgaz to broaden its operations and reinforce the goal of ensuring that energy in Romania remains secure and accessible to all citizens and businesses. He also noted that Romgaz will become the second major company in the Ministry of Energy’s portfolio to join the Romanian supply market, following Hidroelectrica.

In addition, Minister Burduja revealed that both Romgaz and Hidroelectrica have been tasked with expanding their supply operations into other regional markets in the medium term. To support these objectives, the Ministry is also preparing legislative changes aimed at encouraging demand-side management and demand-response systems, as well as differentiated tariffs to balance energy supply and demand at optimal prices for consumers.

To achieve its goals, Romgaz has launched a tender for the development of an IT platform to manage the supply of gas and energy to consumers. The platform will feature a dedicated web portal for customers to sign contracts and pay bills. The system is expected to be operational by August or September 2025.
