Data from the National Institute for Statistics indicates that Romania’s electricity production experienced a notable increase in January 2026, reaching a total of 4.93 TWh. This figure represents a substantial rise of 10.9% compared to the same month in the previous year, highlighting a shift in the energy landscape despite a decline in primary energy output.
The breakdown of electricity consumption shows that overall demand reached 4.65 TWh, marking a 3.6% increase year-on-year. Industrial sectors accounted for the majority of this consumption at 3.58 TWh, reflecting a growth of 5.4%. Conversely, household electricity consumption saw a slight decrease of 1.9%, totaling 1.04 TWh, while public lighting usage fell by 5.7%, equating to 39.6 GWh.
A closer look at production sources reveals that thermal power plants contributed 1.92 TWh, which is an increase of 0.9%. Hydropower generation surged significantly by 35.3%, achieving 1.18 TWh. However, output from the Cernavoda nuclear facility declined by 3.4%, resulting in production of 0.99 TWh. Wind energy generation experienced remarkable growth, rising by 39.8% to reach 696 GWh, while solar power output saw a minor decrease of 2%, totaling 146.8 GWh.
<pIn terms of international electricity trade, Romania exported 1.05 TWh, which is down by 5.5% from January 2025, while imports decreased significantly by 14.7%, amounting to 1.44 TWh. These changes reflect evolving dynamics in both domestic production capabilities and regional market interactions.
The primary energy resources sector faced challenges, with total production dropping to 1,407.8 million tons of oil equivalent, representing a decline of 7.8%. Coal output fell sharply by 19.9%, amounting to only 138 million tons of oil equivalent. Oil production also decreased by 8.9%, reaching 199.5 million tons strong>, and natural gas production slightly declined by 1.1% to total approximately 654.4 million tons of oil equivalent.
