Record dispatchable solar generation on 19 June
Romania recorded a new high for solar power generation, with output surpassing the previous all-time peak just one day after it was reached. According to data from transmission system operator Transelectrica, on 19 June at 12:33, dispatchable solar power plants produced 2,952 MW. This figure exceeded the prior record of 2,690 MW. Total electricity generation in Romania at the same time was around 6,020 MW, with solar becoming the largest single source in the mix.
Grid demand, hydropower and nuclear availability
Electricity consumption from the grid was approximately 4,100 MW. Hydropower output remained below 1,000 MW. One of Romania’s nuclear units was also offline during the period cited in the system data. As a result, solar’s relative contribution to meeting demand increased.
Solar share including prosumer generation
System data show that solar plants covered around 72% of electricity consumption from the network at the time of the peak, excluding production from prosumers. When rooftop and small-scale installations were included, total solar output rose further. Transelectrica estimates that prosumers added around 1,930 MW between 12:00 and 13:00, bringing total solar generation close to 5,000 MW during the midday peak.
Prosumer scale and cross-border exports
Romania has more than 320,000 prosumers, with combined installed capacity exceeding 3,700 MW. Strong solar production supported higher cross-border flows during the record period. Romania exported approximately 2,200 MW of electricity to neighbouring markets at that time.
