In the first nine months of 2020 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 39.31 TWh, which is 2.6 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 29.36 TWh, which is 5.1 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 9.57 TWh, which is a 3.6 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 8.1 % amounting to some 382.8 GWh. Total electricity production reached 41.38 TWh in the first nine months of 2020, which is 7.4 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 14.6 % and reached 14.69 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 10.2 % to 11.61 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 1.7 % to 8.35 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 7.8 % compared to January-September 2019 period, reaching 5.24 TWh. Solar power production increased by 1.5 % to 1.49 TWh. Electricity exports in the first nine months of 2020 amounted to 3.67 TWh, which is by 42.5 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 61.5 % and amounted to 5.41 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-September 2020 amounted to 13,271 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 11.4 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 1,861 million tons of oil equivalent (- 32.8 %), oil production reached 2,445 million tons of oil equivalent (- 2 %), while production of natural gas reached 5,340 million tons of oil equivalent (- 11.8 %).
