Romania aims for 6.5 GW wind power capacity by 2028 amid Europe’s renewable energy surge

Romania is projected to reach 6.5 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind power capacity by 2028, with 3 GW expected to be added within the next three years, according to the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA). This rapid growth is driven by a new generation of wind turbines that are three times more powerful than those installed 15 years ago. These modern turbines are viewed as vital to enhancing energy security and stability, offering a clean and cost-effective complement to solar power.

At the European level, wind energy capacity has already reached 1.1 terawatts (TW), and ongoing developments are anticipated to double this capacity by 2030. The wind sector has also become an important source of employment, providing over 400,000 direct jobs along with numerous roles in related industries such as cable manufacturing, component production, and bearing manufacturing. This expansion highlights wind energy’s growing contribution to a circular and sustainable economy.
