Region, Bulgaria to export electricity to North Macedonia during winter

Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev said after the meeting with his North Macedonian counterpart Dimitar Kovacevski that Bulgaria will explore options for the export of electricity to North Macedonia during the winter season, as well as allowing the neighboring country to use the reserve gas storage capacity at Bulgaria’s underground gas storage facility at Chiren.

PM Donev said that Bulgaria could export up to 200 MWh of electricity to North Macedonia until 31 March 2023, adding that the technical and other terms of the possible electricity exports and gas deliveries will be determined by a joint working group that will be established soon.

The two countries will also explore an agreement for the construction of additional infrastructure capacity to carry natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Bulgaria to North Macedonia. Access by North Macedonia to the Chiren facility could mean that it would be able to rely on quantities to be delivered through the Greece- Bulgaria interconnector and through the future LNG terminal at Alexandroupoli in northern Greece.
