Serbia’s energy landscape is witnessing a significant shift with the commissioning of a new solar power facility by NIS, the country’s prominent oil company. Located at its oil products storage complex in Novi Sad, this ground-mounted solar power plant is set to generate approximately 8.7 GWh of electricity annually, marking it as NIS’s largest solar project to date and positioning it among the largest operational solar plants in Serbia.
Spanning around 10 hectares and equipped with nearly 12,000 photovoltaic panels, the facility is expected to deliver a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, estimated at about 10,000 tons per year. This initiative aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions and demonstrates NIS’s commitment to incorporating renewable energy into its operational framework.
The launch of this facility has effectively tripled NIS’s total solar capacity. With an output of 6.8 MW, the electricity generated could potentially satisfy the annual consumption needs of approximately 2,000 average Serbian households. All produced electricity will be integrated directly into the distribution network for commercial sale, enhancing both local supply and economic viability.
This installation complements NIS’s existing solar portfolio, which already features systems installed at 78 petrol stations across Serbia. Additional solar capacity enhancements have been made at various industrial and administrative sites, including:
- A hybrid solar system at the Jazak drinking water production facility with a capacity of 620 kW.
- A rooftop installation of 585 kW at the Novi Sad oil derivatives storage site.
- A 100 kW rooftop system at NIS’s business building.
- Six rooftop solar plants at the Pančevo oil refinery totaling 610 kW.
As a result of these developments, NIS’s total solar installations now boast a combined capacity of approximately 11.3 MW, projected to generate around 13.5 GWh annually. Collectively, these projects are anticipated to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 15,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent each year, further solidifying Serbia’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing its renewable energy capabilities.
