INA has completed the initial phase of its environmental remediation project at the Rijeka oil refinery, collaborating with an international consortium led by Lamor and Litocrean. This project is pivotal for addressing historical contamination issues at the site, which is located in a sensitive marine environment.
The first stage concentrated on a thorough subsurface investigation, which included drilling five exploratory wells. Following this, comprehensive geological and hydrological analyses were conducted to gain insights into fluid movement within the karst terrain beneath the refinery. Core samples were analyzed, and advanced camera systems were utilized to inspect boreholes, facilitating precise mapping of underground conditions.
Having laid the groundwork, INA has now transitioned into the second phase of the project, which commenced in mid-January. This stage involves additional drilling operations and the preparation of technical documentation for a hydraulic barrier system. This system will consist of a series of wells along the shoreline of Urinj peninsula, designed to create an artificial underground depression that will help collect and redirect contaminated fluids away from the sea. This barrier is crucial for the long-term marine protection strategy associated with the refinery’s operations.
Looking ahead, the third phase will focus on installing treatment equipment and commencing pumping operations. The overall project is valued at 6 million euros and is slated for completion in 2027, with the objective of permanently resolving legacy contamination issues beneath the refinery complex.
In addition to these long-term initiatives, INA is implementing immediate protective measures. Currently, 33 extraction wells are operationally removing residual hydrocarbons from the karst system. Continuous marine monitoring is in place to ensure rapid response capabilities if needed. Regular inspections of storage tanks, drainage systems, and stormwater infrastructure are being conducted as remediation activities progress according to established plans. Furthermore, stronger offshore containment booms are set to be installed along the coastline once necessary permits are obtained from relevant authorities.
