Electricity demand in North Macedonia totaled 667,016 MWh in March 2026. Natural gas consumption reached 16.22 million cubic meters, while coal use was 289,340 tons and petroleum product consumption stood at 75,475 tons. Data from the State Statistical Office show that 79.6% of electricity consumption was covered by domestic production, with 99.9% of coal used for electricity generation.
Production mix changes across thermal, hydropower and wind
Total gross electricity production in March 2026 was 531,062 MWh, down 3.9% year-on-year. Thermal power plants generated 166,935 MWh, accounting for 31.4% of output, and down 36.8% versus March 2025. Hydropower production reached 204,000 MWh, or 38.4%, up 120.3%, while CHP plants contributed 11,726 MWh (2.2%) after falling 79%. Wind farms produced 23,349 MWh, representing 4.4%.
Biogas and distributed solar generation contribute to supply
Biogas power plants generated 3,208 MWh. Solar power plants, including prosumers, delivered 121,846 MWh, accounting for 22.9% of total electricity production in March 2026. This adds to the share of non-thermal generation within the monthly output figures.
Imports decrease while exports fall year-on-year
Electricity imports in March 2026 amounted to 172,504 MWh, compared with 190,601 MWh in the same month of the previous year. Exports declined to 36,550 MWh, from 75,976 MWh in March 2025. The trade figures indicate a lower export volume alongside reduced import levels during the month.
