Helleniq Energy Enters Romania’s Renewable Energy Sector with New Solar Projects

Helleniq Energy has marked its entry into the Romanian renewable energy landscape by commissioning two new solar power plants through its subsidiary, Helleniq Renewables. This development signifies the company’s inaugural operational green energy assets in Romania, as they begin commercial operations.

The newly established solar parks are situated in southern Romania, specifically in Merenii de Jos within Teleorman County and in the town of Ianca located in Olt County. Together, these facilities boast an installed capacity of 58 MW and are now integrated into the national electricity transmission network. At full operational capacity, these plants are projected to generate sufficient electricity to meet the annual consumption needs of approximately 60,000 households. This initiative not only contributes to clean energy production but also aligns with Romania’s objectives for a lower-carbon energy framework by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the share of renewable generation.

The commissioning of these solar facilities represents the initial phase of a larger investment initiative initiated through a partnership agreement signed in 2023 with the firm Metlen. This agreement encompasses the development and acquisition of four solar projects within Romania, which collectively aim for a capacity of 211 MW. Additionally, two further solar power plants under this partnership are currently being developed, which will add another 153 MW, with commercial operations anticipated in 2026.

The ambitions of Helleniq Energy extend beyond solar initiatives. The company is also planning a wind energy project in eastern Romania, specifically a 96 MW wind farm in Galati, expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027. Upon completion of these projects, Helleniq Energy’s total installed renewable capacity in Romania is projected to surpass 300 MW.

Apart from ongoing construction activities, Helleniq Energy has developed an extensive pipeline for renewable investments across Romania. The company’s portfolio now exceeds 850 MW, which includes a diverse mix of solar plants, wind farms, and energy storage installations. The role of energy storage is anticipated to be vital in balancing renewable production and enhancing the reliability of both national and regional electricity systems.

Recognizing Romania as a strategic market due to its substantial renewable potential and favorable transition policies, Helleniq Energy has indicated plans to explore further investment opportunities. These opportunities may focus on large-scale solar and wind generation projects as well as advanced storage technologies aimed at improving electricity network flexibility.
