The European Commission (EC) has approved the financial package intended for the project for the construction of 680 MW pump-storage hydropower plant Amfilohia in northwestern Greece, developed by Terna Energy.
The construction of the HPP will be partially funded with a 250 million euros grant from Greek Recovery and Resilience Facility. According to the EC, the financial aid is necessary, while its level corresponds to the effective financing requirements. The positive effects of the measure outweigh any potential distortion of competition and trade brought about by the support.
The Amfilohia hydropower complex consists of two production units and three reservoirs. Total effective reservoir storage capacity is 7 million cubic meters, equivalent to 3.97 TWh. The Agios Georgios unit has 5 million cubic meters and it will work with four reversible Francis-type turbines of an overall 460 MW or 496 MW in pumping mode, compared to 2 million cubic meters and two turbines at Pyrgos with the capacity of 220 MW or 234 MW in pumping mode.
The project is also included in the list of European Projects of Common Interest (PCI).
