During the week of August 24, solar photovoltaic power generation in Germany increased by 20% compared with the previous week, recovering after the decline recorded the week before. In contrast, solar output fell across the other major European electricity markets. Portugal recorded the largest decline, with production dropping by 19%, followed by Spain and France, where output fell by 11% and 8.7%, respectively. Italy registered the smallest decrease, at 2.5%.
The decline in solar generation continued in several markets for a second or fourth consecutive week. Portugal and France recorded their second consecutive weekly decreases, while Spain and Italy extended their downward trends to four consecutive weeks.
For the week beginning August 31, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting point to a recovery in solar power generation in the Spanish and Italian markets. In contrast, Germany is expected to see another decline in solar photovoltaic production.
Meanwhile, wind energy production increased across all major European electricity markets during the fourth week of August compared with the previous week. Portugal recorded the strongest growth, with wind generation rising by 60%, while Germany followed with a 55% increase. France and Spain registered increases of 27% and 23%, respectively, while Italy recorded the smallest rise, at 4.6%.
Germany, France, Portugal and Spain recorded second consecutive weekly increases in wind power production. Italy also extended its positive trend, marking a third consecutive week of growth in wind generation.
The week also saw significant milestones in wind power generation. On August 24, Portugal produced 81 GWh of wind energy, the highest level ever recorded for an August day. On August 29, France generated 218 GWh, marking its highest daily wind production for an August day since 2023.
For the week of August 31, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects wind power generation to increase further in the German market. In contrast, wind output is forecast to decline in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, according to the latest forecasts.
