European Solar and Wind Energy Markets Experience Mixed Trends from February 9 to 16

In the week spanning February 9 to 16, European electricity markets exhibited varied trends in solar and wind energy production. Solar photovoltaic output surged notably across several key markets, with Spain leading the increase at 16%, following a consistent upward trajectory from the previous week. Germany recorded a growth of 13%, marking its second consecutive week of gains, while Portugal saw a modest rise of 5%. Italy’s solar generation increased by just 0.4%, but it continued the positive momentum observed over the last fortnight. Conversely, France encountered a significant setback, with photovoltaic generation plummeting by 27% after three weeks of growth.

Italy achieved a remarkable milestone during this period, reaching an all-time high for solar energy production on February 13, generating 89 GWh in a single day. Looking ahead to the week of February 16, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy suggest that solar output is expected to continue rising in Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Turning to wind energy, France again led the weekly increases with an impressive jump of 38%, marking its second consecutive week of significant growth. Meanwhile, Spain and Portugal rebounded from prior declines with increases of 8.6% and 6.0%, respectively. However, both Germany and Italy faced declines in wind output; Germany’s production fell by 17%, continuing the downward trend from the previous week, while Italy experienced a drop of 15% after three weeks of positive performance.

The French market also set a new record for wind energy production on February 11, achieving an output of 380 GWh for a February day. For the upcoming week of February 16, forecasts indicate that wind energy production is anticipated to rise in Italy and Germany; however, decreases are expected in Portugal, Spain, and France according to AleaSoft’s projections.
