Germany and Italy emerged as leaders in solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, recording increases of 46% and 25%, respectively. This marked a reversal from the previous week’s downturn. Meanwhile, France experienced a modest growth of 2.3%, continuing its gradual upward trend for the third consecutive week. Portugal’s solar output also improved, rising by 5.4%. In contrast, Spain faced a decline of 13%, breaking its previous upward trajectory and illustrating a divergence within the Iberian Peninsula.
April 20 marked a historic day for several European markets as they achieved new solar production records for the month. France recorded its highest-ever April output at 149 GWh, followed by Germany with a daily peak of 444 GWh on April 22, showcasing robust spring irradiance conditions. Italy set an all-time record on April 24 with 163 GWh, while Portugal reached its highest monthly level on the same day with an output of 28 GWh. These achievements highlight the increasing significance of solar energy in influencing short-term electricity supply dynamics throughout Europe.
Looking ahead, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that solar generation will likely continue to rise during the week of April 27 in key markets including Italy, Germany, and Spain. This anticipated increase reflects ongoing weather-driven volatility and seasonal variations.
The wind energy sector also demonstrated notable movements during this period, with significant gains reported across most major European markets compared to the prior week. Germany and France saw remarkable surges in wind generation, increasing by 127% and 115%, respectively, effectively reversing three weeks of declines. Portugal’s wind production rose by a more moderate 42%, indicating steadier conditions.
Conversely, Spain and Italy diverged from this regional trend, with Spain experiencing its fourth consecutive weekly decline in wind generation at 23%, while Italy recorded a decrease of 20%. This disparity underscores the uneven availability of wind resources across Southern Europe.
AleaSoft’s forecasts indicate that during the week of April 27, wind energy production is expected to decline across all analyzed markets. This anticipated shift could lead to tighter supply conditions and an increased reliance on alternative energy sources.
