European energy update: Solar and wind production fluctuations in September

In the week of September 16, solar energy production across major European markets saw a significant decrease, particularly in Portugal and Spain, which experienced declines of 25% and 24%, respectively. This marked a notable shift, as such reductions hadn’t been seen since late March and early April 2024. France experienced a smaller decline of 12%, ending its recent upward trend, while Germany bucked the trend with a 36% increase in solar production after two weeks of declines.

As forecasts for the week of September 23 predict, solar production in Spain is set to rise again, while Germany and Italy are expected to see decreases. Wind energy production also fell across most markets, reversing last week’s gains. Italy faced the largest drop at 78%, followed by Portugal (27%), Germany (18%), and Spain (15%). However, France stood out with a 5.4% increase.

Despite these overall declines, September 17 saw impressive daily wind production, with Spain generating 257 GWh—its highest since June 1—France reaching 232 GWh, and Portugal achieving 63 GWh, both notable highs for their respective periods.

Looking ahead to September 23, forecasts indicate a rebound in wind energy production in Germany, Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula, while a decline is expected in France, AleaSoft reports.
