Europe: Electricity demand rises in early November

During the week of November 11, electricity demand increased in most major European markets compared to the previous week. The French market saw the largest rise, with demand up by 8.3%, continuing its upward trend for the fourth consecutive week. Other markets, including Portugal, Spain, Germany, and Italy, also experienced demand increases, ranging from 3.2% in Portugal to 4.9% in Italy, marking a second consecutive week of growth in these regions, AleaSoft reports.

However, some markets saw a decrease in demand, particularly in the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain. The Dutch market registered the biggest drop, falling by 5.2%, while the British market saw a small decline of 0.4%, and Belgium’s demand decreased by 1.4%.

In terms of temperature trends, average temperatures dropped across most of the analyzed markets. The Iberian Peninsula experienced the most significant drop, with temperatures falling by 3.1°C, while Germany saw the smallest decrease at just 0.1°C. France, Italy, and Great Britain all registered temperature decreases, with drops ranging from 0.9°C in Great Britain to 3.0°C in Italy. On the other hand, Belgium and the Netherlands saw slight increases in average temperatures, rising by 1.6°C and 2.1°C, respectively.

The November 11 holiday, Armistice Day, celebrated in Belgium and France, contributed to reduced demand in Belgium. Meanwhile, in France, lower average temperatures during the week led to higher electricity demand, despite the reduction in work activity due to the holiday on Monday.

Looking ahead to the third week of November, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s demand forecasts suggest that demand will rise in most major European markets, except for the Iberian Peninsula and Germany, where a slight decrease in demand is expected, AleaSoft reports.
