EU: Electricity prices fell by 74% year-on-year in August 2023

European electricity prices fell by around 74% in August 2023 compared to August 2022. Prices on the 15 European Exchanges in August 2023 increased by 10% compared to July. They ranged from 34.2 euros/MWh on the Norpool Exchange to 11.9 euros/MWh on the Italian GME in August 2023.

The monthly average price on the Slovenian energy exchange, down by 81% year-on-year, was 94.7 euros/MWh in August 2023. The average price at the Romanian exchange OPCOM amounted to 101,65 euros/MWh.

The Greek system marginal price reached 109.33 euros/MWh in August 2023, down by 3% compared to July and by 75% from August 2022.

The traded volume on EPEX SPOT’s Day-Ahead and Intraday power markets in August 2023 reached 57.6 TWh, compared to 50 TWh in August 2022. That represents an increase of 15% year on year. Power trading on the Day-Ahead markets on the EPEX SPOT, including APX, totalled 42.5 TWh, compared to 39.3 TWh in August 2022.

On the EPEX SPOT Intraday markets, including APX, a total volume of 15.1 TWh was traded in August 2023, compared to 10.7 TWh in August 2023. That represents an increase of 41%.

The same month, 873 GWh was traded at the monthly auction for Guarantees of Origin. The German and French spot prices reached 94.32 and 90.87 euros/MWh.
