Environmental Study Validates Buk Bijela Hydropower Plant’s Impact

The recent environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed Buk Bijela hydropower plant, located on the Drina River, has determined that the project is unlikely to adversely affect Montenegro. This conclusion comes at a critical time as regional stakeholders engage in discussions regarding the environmental implications of such developments.

Dušan Živković, the head of Elektroprivreda Srbije, stated that the findings affirm the project’s viability without jeopardizing natural ecosystems. He reiterated the commitment to harnessing resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, aiming to safeguard environmental integrity for future generations.

The comprehensive study was conducted by a consortium of regional experts who evaluated environmental conditions, potential risks, and mitigation strategies. It encompasses both the construction and long-term operational phases of the hydropower facility, ensuring that crucial aspects of environmental safeguarding are thoroughly considered.

Key insights from the assessment indicate that significant protected areas in Montenegro, such as Durmitor National Park and Piva Nature Park, will remain unaffected by the project. Furthermore, no substantial risks to biodiversity, water systems, or public health were identified beyond those already posed by existing infrastructure like the Piva hydropower plant.

Officials from Elektroprivreda Crne Gore emphasized the importance of a constructive and cooperative approach toward large-scale energy initiatives like Buk Bijela. They noted that with meticulous planning, technical and environmental challenges can be effectively navigated, allowing for progress on energy investments while upholding stringent environmental standards.
