CROPEX Reports Monthly Growth in Electricity Trading Amid Yearly Decline

In March 2026, the Croatian electricity exchange CROPEX recorded a total trading volume of 989,922.7 MWh, representing a notable 9.2% increase from February. This uptick reflects a shift in market dynamics, with the day-ahead market contributing 737,162.1 MWh and the intraday market accounting for 252,760.6 MWh. However, despite this monthly growth, the annual comparison reveals a 9.6% decrease in trading volume relative to March 2025.

The pricing landscape within CROPEX exhibited mixed trends across various market segments. The average daily base price on the day-ahead market was recorded at 110.12 euros/MWh, marking a 2.4% increase from the previous month. Conversely, the average euro-peak price experienced a significant drop to 93.73 euros/MWh, down by 17.6% month-on-month. In contrast, the average price on the intraday market rose to 109.85 euros/MWh, reflecting a 4.9% increase compared to February. The day-ahead market’s average daily traded volume was noted at 23,779.4 MWh.

CROPEX has been operational since its establishment on 11 March 2016, in partnership with Nord Pool, serving as Croatia’s central platform for electricity trading. It is co-owned by key entities including the transmission system operator HOPS and market operator HROTE. The introduction of the intraday market in April 2017 marked a significant enhancement in trading flexibility for participants. A pivotal moment occurred on 19 June 2018, when CROPEX successfully coupled its day-ahead market with Multi-Regional Coupling (MRC) markets via the Croatian-Slovenian border, fostering greater regional integration and facilitating cross-border electricity transactions.
