Bulgartransgaz Initiates LNG Tender to Enhance Gas Supply Security

In a strategic move to modernize its procurement processes, Bulgartransgaz, Bulgaria’s natural gas transmission system operator, has announced its first competitive tender focused on liquefied natural gas (LNG). This initiative is designed to fulfill the operational requirements of its transmission network and marks a significant shift in how the company sources its gas supplies.

The tender is set to secure approximately 1.5 million MWh of LNG for the period spanning from July 2026 to September 2027. This procurement is crucial for ensuring the stability and effective operation of Bulgaria’s gas transmission infrastructure, reflecting a proactive approach to energy management amid evolving market conditions.

Deliveries are planned via the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal, a key facility where Bulgartransgaz holds an interest. The terminal is expected to serve a pivotal logistical function in managing incoming LNG shipments as part of this tender process, reinforcing its role in regional energy dynamics.

Participation will be limited to suppliers demonstrating proven expertise in LNG trading and delivery. A prequalification phase will be overseen by the platform operator, with strict requirements that all sourced gas must originate from non-sanctioned jurisdictions. This stipulation underscores Bulgartransgaz’s commitment to adhering to international regulatory standards.

CEO Vladimir Malinov emphasized that this initiative aims to create a transparent and reliable procurement framework that aligns with European standards. By sourcing LNG from established partners such as the United States and other stable exporters, Bulgartransgaz seeks to diversify its supply routes and bolster energy security not only within Bulgaria but throughout the wider region.
