Croatia, Krk LNG terminal could be expanded by gas year 2024-25

Managing Director of LNG Hrvatska, the operator of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the island of Krk, Hrvoje Krhen said that Croatia will approach the announced expansion on the terminal’s capacity by the construction of additional pipelines and the installation of a new regasification module at the same time.

Krhen explained that, while the gas transmission system operator expands the capacity of the gas network, LNG Hrvatska will expand the regasification capacity of the floating regasification and storage unit (FSRU). The plan is to complete all the works in the next two years, so that new capacity could be used as of gas year 2024-25.

Currently, there are three regasification modules on board of the FSRU, so the plan is to build just an additional one.

Last month, the Croatian Government has approved the investment of 180 million euros in the expansion of Krk LNG terminal and the construction of Zlobin-Bosiljevo gas pipeline. Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Davor Filipovic said that the capacity of the LNG terminal will be increased from 2.9 to 6.1 billion cubic meters of gas per year, while the construction of a new pipeline will strengthen the security of gas supply within the country.

Of the allocated 180 million euros, 25 million will be used for upgrading the capacities of the Krk LNG terminal, while the rest will be used for the construction of the gas pipeline and the expansion of the distribution network.
