Croatia: Ancala expands EU Renewables Platform with new 5 MW biomass plant

Infrastructure manager Ancala has expanded its Central and Eastern European EU Renewables Platform with the addition of a new 5 MW green energy plant. This latest acquisition boosts the platform’s generation capacity and extends its portfolio of biomass facilities.

The platform already includes two sites dedicated to renewable energy production from forestry and agricultural biomass. The first site, a 5 MW biomass plant located in Gospic, Croatia, was commissioned in 2021. It benefits from long-term feed-in tariffs and supply agreements and features an integrated wood drying facility that enhances plant efficiency. This site includes the Elektrana Grubisno Polje (EGP) green energy plant and the adjacent Sirocco drying facility, situated east of Zagreb. Both facilities operate as a combined heat and power (CHP) system and are supported by long-term agreements.

Under the new arrangement, the existing management team will remain in place to operate the CHP plant. Ancala plans to assist the team in expanding the plant’s heat output and optimizing its operations.

The transaction also marks an exit for Akuo, a global renewable energy producer with a presence in Croatia since 2013. Akuo will now focus on its core activities in solar, wind, and storage technologies.
