Copper investment shifts to eastern Serbia as Zijin expands RTB Bor operations

European copper supply discussions have long centred on mining jurisdictions including Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Finland. More recent investment activity has highlighted eastern Serbia as a growing copper development area. The focus has moved to the RTB Bor complex and the Čukaru Peki copper-gold deposit.

Zijin’s acquisition and expansion at RTB Bor

Zijin Mining Group, a Chinese mining company, acquired Serbia’s historic RTB Bor complex and then developed the Čukaru Peki deposit. The Bor mining district holds one of Europe’s largest concentrations of copper resources. Since entering Serbia, Zijin has committed several billion dollars across mine development, processing facilities, smelter modernization and exploration programmes.

Copper output from the region has increased significantly since Zijin’s arrival. Exports from Bor have also become an increasingly important contributor to Serbia’s trade performance. This shift has been linked to expanded production and downstream processing capacity in the district.

Čukaru Peki deposit and Upper Zone development

Čukaru Peki was discovered by Nevsun Resources before being acquired through Zijin’s purchase of the Canadian company. The deposit is described as among the highest-grade copper discoveries globally in recent decades. The Upper Zone development entered production as one of the most profitable new copper mines.

Copper demand drivers from electrification

Europe’s electrification agenda requires large quantities of copper. Electric vehicles are cited as consuming approximately three to four times more copper than conventional vehicles. Wind farms, solar parks, battery storage systems and transmission infrastructure also require substantial volumes of copper.

Secure copper supplies are therefore tied to European Union energy transition goals and industrial competitiveness. This demand backdrop is part of the reason investors have focused on Serbia’s copper developments. Copper produced in Bor can supply automotive, electrical equipment and renewable-energy manufacturers across Europe.

Exploration activity and potential downstream value

Serbia is outside the European Union but remains integrated with European manufacturing supply chains. Investors are increasingly discussing whether Serbia can move beyond concentrate and refined copper production into higher-value activities. These include copper products, electrical materials and industrial manufacturing linked to the energy transition.

Mining companies continue expanding exploration programmes throughout eastern Serbia. Several international juniors and mid-tier companies remain active in the Timok Magmatic Complex, described as one of Europe’s most prospective copper regions. Infrastructure improvements, smelter modernization and growing geological understanding are also cited as factors supporting the district’s attractiveness.

Regional implications for supply and industrial demand

For Europe, Serbia offers large-scale copper growth potential within relative proximity to industrial demand centres. For Serbia, copper is presented as a pathway to become more than a mining jurisdiction. The developments in Bor are positioned as supporting Serbia’s role as a supplier of metal underpinning Europe’s energy transition.
