ContourGlobal Expands into Greek Renewable Energy Sector with Solar and Battery Projects

ContourGlobal has officially entered the Greek renewable energy landscape, marking a significant milestone in its European expansion strategy. The company has acquired a portfolio of operational solar assets and is developing a substantial pipeline of battery energy storage projects, aligning with its commitment to clean energy generation and system flexibility.

The acquisition includes a 37 MW solar portfolio, comprising 26 solar power plants that were previously managed by Quest Energy. These facilities, which have been developed over a span of more than ten years, benefit from long-term support schemes and collectively produce approximately 51 GWh of electricity annually. While the financial details of this transaction remain undisclosed, it is part of a broader strategy involving multiple asset purchases across the region.

In addition to solar assets, ContourGlobal has secured full ownership of standalone battery storage projects that boast a combined capacity of up to 500 MW and 2,000 MWh. This pipeline was established through agreements with Spanish developer FRV and Greek firm Zephiros, significantly enhancing ContourGlobal’s presence in one of Europe’s rapidly expanding battery markets.

A standout component of this initiative is the Taxiarches battery project, located in the Thessaly region. This facility, with a capacity of 100 MW / 400 MWh, is fully prepared for construction and is anticipated to be among the first merchant battery projects in Greece. It will operate without long-term contracts, relying instead on revenues generated from market activities. Construction is expected to commence shortly, with commercial operations targeted for early 2027.

The remaining battery projects within ContourGlobal’s portfolio, totaling up to 400 MW and 1,600 MWh, have already secured essential environmental approvals and permits. These projects are positioned under Greece’s priority framework for standalone energy storage, set to be introduced in 2025. This regulatory framework will facilitate their accelerated development amid rising demand for grid flexibility.

Greece represents a strategic focus for ContourGlobal within its broader European growth agenda. The company currently operates renewable generation and storage facilities across several countries including Italy, Spain, Austria, and Bulgaria. The increasing penetration of renewables in Greece underscores the necessity for large-scale battery solutions to support grid stability and reliability.

Leveraging its extensive experience in global battery storage projects, including recent advancements in the United States, ContourGlobal aims to utilize Greece as a strategic platform for scaling energy storage initiatives throughout Europe. The company’s investments are expected to play a crucial role in facilitating Greece’s energy transition while reinforcing its status as a leading independent player in both renewable energy generation and large-scale energy storage solutions.
