Chinese Manufacturer to Supply Turbines for Major Wind Farm in Serbia

Dongfang Wind Power, a prominent Chinese wind-turbine manufacturer, has secured a contract for the provision of 48 wind turbines as part of a significant 300 MW wind power initiative in Serbia. This project, with an estimated investment of €495 million, is poised to become the largest wind farm not only in Serbia but also in Eastern Europe, marking a notable advancement in the region’s renewable energy landscape.

The wind farm, internationally known as Vitello and locally referred to as the Vetrozelena project, will be established in the Pančevo area—an industrial and energy hub. The completion of this facility is expected to enhance Serbia’s renewable energy capacity considerably and improve the stability of its electricity grid, particularly benefiting the northern and eastern regions of the country.

Each turbine will have a capacity of 6.25 MW, representing cutting-edge onshore wind technology. Once operational, the wind farm is anticipated to generate approximately 774 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output is projected to meet a significant portion of household energy needs while simultaneously decreasing reliance on fossil fuels within Serbia’s energy mix.

The project is spearheaded by China Power Construction Group, which serves as both the main investor and the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. The company will oversee all aspects of the project, including turbine supply, construction activities, grid integration, and commissioning processes. This investment highlights China’s increasing involvement in Serbia’s energy infrastructure and underscores growing collaboration on large-scale power initiatives.

To ensure compliance with local standards and conditions, project developers have tailored the turbine designs and technical specifications to meet Serbian regulatory requirements. Key engineering considerations include enhancing wind resistance, optimizing low-temperature performance, and ensuring grid compatibility. These adjustments aim to guarantee reliable operation over an expected lifespan of 30 years.

While specific timelines for construction have yet to be disclosed publicly, commercial operations are projected to commence in 2027. Once completed, this wind farm will signify a major milestone for Serbia’s energy transition—both in terms of scale and technological advancement—solidifying its status as a vital player in Eastern Europe’s onshore wind market.
