A hybrid renewable upgrade has been commissioned at a major solar facility in southern Bulgaria following the start-up of a large-scale battery storage system. The project was developed through cooperation between Eurohold Bulgaria and renewable energy company 360 Energy.
The newly delivered battery energy storage system, provided by ESCO Bulgaria, adds 36 MW of power capacity and 72 MWh of storage capability to the Maglizh solar project. With the addition, photovoltaic generation can be paired with energy storage to support operational flexibility and grid integration.
The Maglizh complex is located near the village of Dabovo in the Stara Zagora region. The site already operates a solar plant with an installed capacity of 161 MW, and it is jointly owned by 360 Energy and Solaris Energy, a company linked to the principal shareholders of Eurohold Bulgaria.
The solar power plant entered commercial operation in September 2025. It is connected to Bulgaria’s national transmission network through operator ESO, and developers state it is expected to generate enough electricity annually to supply more than 65,000 households.
Project developers also estimate that the renewable complex will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 200,000 tons per year. The figures are presented as part of efforts aligned with Bulgaria’s climate and clean energy objectives.
Financing was arranged via a consortium including UBB, Ascory Bank, Raiffeisen International Bank, Bulgarian Postbank and UniCredit Bulbank. Additional support was provided through Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The battery integration reflects a broader European approach in which renewable developers combine solar or wind generation with storage systems. The stated aims include improving energy balancing, enhancing grid stability and strengthening electricity network reliability.
