The energy landscape in Bosnia and Herzegovina has seen significant changes in October 2025, as total electricity production reached 1,232 GWh, marking an increase from 1,142 GWh in the same month of the previous year. This growth is primarily attributed to a notable rise in thermal power generation, which accounted for 66.5% of the total output, while hydropower’s share decreased significantly.
Hydropower plants produced 296 GWh, reflecting a 25% decrease compared to October 2024. This decline contrasts sharply with the performance of thermal plants, which generated 752 GWh, representing a robust 19.9% year-on-year increase. Additionally, renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, contributed 115 GWh, showcasing an impressive growth rate of 150%.
The shift in generation sources has also impacted the import and export dynamics of electricity in the region. Imports fell by 31%, totaling 300 GWh, down from 435 GWh a year earlier. Exports experienced a decline as well, decreasing by 16.6% to reach 487 GWh, compared to 584 GWh in October 2024.
The fuel sector reflects similar trends with increased production levels. Lignite output rose by 4.8%, reaching 650,000 tons, while brown coal production increased by 2%, totaling 569,000 tons. In contrast, natural gas imports surged to 20.8 million cubic meters, marking a significant increase of 26% from the previous year’s figure of 16.51 million cubic meters.
This evolving energy profile indicates a strategic pivot towards thermal and renewable resources as hydropower faces operational challenges. The implications for energy policy and market dynamics are profound, suggesting a need for regulatory adjustments to support this transition while ensuring energy security and sustainability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
