In a significant move towards environmental compliance, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s state-owned utility, EPBiH, has launched a procurement process for a €32 million flue gas denitrification facility at the Kakanj thermal power plant. This initiative aims to align the country’s coal-based electricity generation with stringent European Union environmental standards.
The tender process is structured as a multi-stage procedure, beginning with prequalification and advancing through initial bids, negotiations, and final offers. The project will incorporate selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology on units 6 and 7, which is expected to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
Under an EPC turnkey model, the selected contractor will handle all aspects of design, construction, and commissioning. The project scope includes preparing technical documentation, conducting preliminary activities, constructing SCR systems, performance testing, and trial operations. Completion is anticipated within 24 months from the effective contract date.
This investment aligns with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s commitments as part of the Energy Community, particularly regarding adherence to EU directives that impose limits on emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), NOx, and particulate matter from coal-fired power plants. The upgrade aims to meet the standards set forth in the National Emission Reduction Plan, targeting a reduction of NOx emissions to no more than 150 mg/Nm³.
The newly installed SCR systems are projected to have an operational lifespan of approximately 20 years, with project completion expected by the end of 2027. This modernization will enable units 6 and 7 to continue operating while contributing up to 2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually. Furthermore, it promises significant environmental and public health improvements while enhancing opportunities for local companies during both construction and operational phases.
