According to the RS Government, oil refinery in Bosanski Brod, owned by Russian company Zarubezhneft, is planning to build 100 MW gas- fired power plant, an investment of some 150 million euros.
The statement from the Government said that the refinery is currently carrying out a feasibility study for the project and plans to submit a request for a concession after the study is completed, adding that it has already approved an agreement on the cooperation in the project.
Last month, member of the BiH Presidency Milorad Dodik said that Russia will invest 1.5 billion euros in the construction of two gas-fired power plants in the Republic of Srpska (RS), with installed capacity of 600 MW each. Dodik explained that Russia will provide financing for the two plants, while RS will be the minority partner. However, the prerequisite for this projects is the construction of gas pipeline stretching from the border with Serbia to Banja Luka and Prijedor.
Bosanski Brod refinery recorded a net loss in the amount of 59.2 million euros in 2021, with the accumulated loss of the refinery reaching 398.5 million euros at the end of 2021.
The refinery is out of operation since January 2019 and it was initially expected that it should be back online in early 2020. However, the production has not been restarted yet, although the gas pipeline connecting the refinery to natural gas transmission system of Croatia has been completed in 2021.
