Višegrad hydropower generated 72.73 GWh in May 2026 after April decline

The 315 MW Višegrad hydropower plant produced 72.73 GWh of electricity in May 2026, according to Hidroelektrane na Drini, a subsidiary of Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske. Output fell sharply from April levels during the month. The May figure was still higher than production in the same month of the previous year.

Hidroelektrane na Drini said monthly generation declined by 34.1% from 110.36 GWh in April. In May 2025, production reached 59.11 GWh. Compared with that level, May 2026 output increased by approximately 23%.

Monthly generation shifts in the Drina basin

The company linked the month-on-month fall to changes in hydrological conditions following a strong April. Hydropower generation in the Drina basin can vary substantially between months as inflows change. Reservoir management and downstream system requirements also affect monthly output.

During the first five months of 2026, cumulative generation reached 583.49 GWh. This total corresponded to almost 75% of the plant’s full-year production of 781.8 GWh in 2025. It was also nearly 80% of the 733 GWh generated in 2024.

Plant configuration and annual production benchmarks

Višegrad was commissioned in 1989 and has three units of 105 MW each. Its long-term average annual production is approximately 1,010 GWh. The record annual output of 1,283.05 GWh was achieved in 2010.

At the May run rate, the plant would not sustain the stronger pace recorded earlier in 2026 . Even so, cumulative output of 583.49 GWh meant Višegrad had already delivered almost 58% of its long-term annual average before entering the second half of the year .

Role in Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina power balance

The plant supports the electricity balance of Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina through dispatchable hydro generation. Hydro output can reduce exposure to coal availability and imported electricity. Its commercial value is also increasing as solar penetration widens differences between midday and evening prices.

Reservoir-based hydro can shift generation toward more expensive hours if water-management and environmental constraints allow it . Višegrad’s cumulative performance gives Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske a production buffer, while final results depend on summer and autumn hydrology . The May decline shows how quickly that advantage can narrow when inflows weaken.
