Committee on Infrastructure, Environment and Spatial Planning, and the Committee on the Economy, of the Slovenian National Assembly held a joint session to discuss the importance of the construction of a second unit at nuclear power plant Krsko.
The session was attended by representatives of the Slovenian company GEN Energija, which is expected to undertake this project. The head of GEN Energija Dejan Paravan conveyed to the committee members the need to expedite the processes for realizing the NPP Krsko 2 project, and a special law will be required for the swift inclusion of the new nuclear power plant in spatial plans.
He said that this is a crucial project for Slovenia and should not be subject to day-to-day political disputes. According to him, a combination of investments in renewable sources and nuclear energy makes sense to address the challenges of decarbonization and achieve an appropriate level of energy self-sufficiency.
GEN Energija is focused on commencing the process of creating a national spatial plan. The goal is to include the future power plant in spatial plans so that a final decision on the project’s investment can be made by 2028. The State Secretary for the National Nuclear Program in the Office of the Slovenian Prime Minister Danijel Levicar said that among the key tasks of the Government’s working group for coordinating preparatory activities on the NPP Krsko 2 project is monitoring the dynamics of the investor and aligning special legislation for the power plant’s construction.
The members of the two committees unanimously decided to support the acceleration of all procedures related to the project, and proposed that the Slovenian Government continue necessary activities to prepare the project efficiently and transparently.
