Slovenia boosts electricity network upgrade support to €58.66 million

Slovenia has increased funding available for electricity-network upgrades to €58.66 million, adding more than €10 million to the original support programme. The previous funding envelope stood at €48.15 million. The expanded resources are intended to support grid-modernisation efforts.

EU Modernization Fund allocation for medium- and high-voltage projects

The additional funding will come from the EU Modernization Fund. It will be directed toward medium- and high-voltage network projects planned for the remainder of the decade. This allocation links the programme’s financing with EU-level climate and market mechanisms.

Funding through the Modernization Fund ultimately comes from revenues generated by auctioning allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System. The programme therefore channels carbon-market proceeds into infrastructure required to integrate additional low-carbon generation. Slovenia’s approach places emphasis on enabling network connection and operations.

Eligibility, operators and application deadline

Eligible investments must be included in List A of Slovenia’s indicative 2024-2030 investment programme. Both transmission and distribution system operators are able to apply for support. The current application deadline is set at 30 August.

Role of network capacity in electrification and resilience

The increase reflects a growing recognition that network capacity is becoming one of the principal constraints on further electrification and renewable deployment. Stronger transmission and distribution infrastructure is intended to create additional space for solar and other renewable projects. The upgrades are also aimed at accommodating battery storage, EV charging and heat pumps.

The investments are also intended to increase system resilience as electricity consumption becomes more dependent on networks. This comes alongside growth in the number of decentralised generating and consuming assets.
