Commercial start for 930 MW solar portfolio in Western Macedonia
German utility RWE and Greece’s PPC have begun commercial operation of a 930 MW solar portfolio at the site of the former Amynteo lignite mine in Western Macedonia. The companies said the facilities are now in operation following construction on the former coal-mining area.
Project structure and expected household-equivalent output
The portfolio comprises nine solar power plants arranged into three clusters. Development was carried out through the joint venture Meton Energy, with RWE holding a 51% stake and PPC owning the remaining 49%. According to the companies, the new solar capacity is expected to generate enough electricity annually to match the equivalent demand of around 400,000 households.
Next phase: Kotyli and Neo Syrakio projects in Central Macedonia
RWE and PPC are advancing their cooperation with additional solar developments. Construction is currently underway on the Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar projects in Central Macedonia, which will add a further 567 MW of capacity.
The companies expect the Central Macedonia projects to be completed by 2027. They also said the new facilities are expected to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 240,000 households.
PPC renewable expansion target and battery storage plans
PPC said its investments align with a long-term plan to expand renewable capacity to 19 GW by 2030. The company also indicated that, alongside wind and solar expansion, it plans significant investments in battery energy storage systems. These batteries are intended to support grid integration and enable higher shares of renewable generation.
