As of late 2025, Romania’s prosumer solar market has experienced significant expansion, with nearly 290,000 registered prosumers and an installed capacity exceeding 3.3 GW, according to the national energy regulator ANRE. This remarkable growth underscores the increasing adoption of solar energy solutions within the country.
By November, Romania reported just under 288,000 prosumers contributing to a total generation capacity of approximately 3.35 GW. This development marks an annual increase of nearly 48% in the number of participants and over 43% in installed capacity, highlighting the swift proliferation of rooftop and on-site solar installations. Households represent the majority of these prosumers, totaling around 258,000, while companies and public institutions account for just over 30,000 participants. Notably, both residential and non-residential segments exhibit nearly equal capacity contributions: households provide about 1.67 GW, while commercial and institutional systems contribute approximately 1.68 GW.
The scale of this transformation is striking; at the close of 2019, Romania had only a few hundred registered prosumers. The total installed capacity surpassed the notable milestone of 3 GW for the first time in August 2025.
The integration of energy storage solutions is becoming increasingly prevalent in Romania’s solar landscape. By November, over 58,000 installations included battery systems—primarily in residential settings—indicating that more than one in five residential prosumers now enhances their solar setups with storage capabilities. This trend is crucial for improving network flexibility and self-sufficiency in energy production. Furthermore, industry estimates suggest that Romania’s overall solar capacity—including large-scale power plants—has exceeded 7 GW as of 2025, reinforcing its position as one of the fastest-growing solar markets in Southeast Europe.
