Romania: Transelectrica announces partial commissioning of Resita substation to boost interconnection with Serbia

Romania’s electricity transmission system operator, Transelectrica, has announced the partial commissioning of the new 400 kV Resita substation, a key milestone in enhancing the country’s interconnection capacity with Serbia. The upgrade will increase the interconnection capacity by up to 300 MW.

The project, which includes the reconstruction of the Resita substation, has reached a significant point with the activation of the 400 kV Resita (RO) – Pancevo (RS) and Portile de Fier – Anina – Resita overhead transmission lines. This will enable the commercial operation of these lines, further strengthening the electricity exchange between Romania and Serbia.

The reconstruction works at the Resita substation, carried out by Siemens Energy, Electrogrup, and Retrasib, are expected to be fully completed by the first quarter of 2025.

The Resita substation is a crucial transformation point on the Banat axis, a major transmission route that connects Portile de Fier, Resita, Timisoara/Sacalaz, and Arad in western Romania. This project is part of a broader initiative to modernize and expand the electricity transmission network in the region.

With the transition of the Banat axis to a 400 kV voltage level, supported by European funding from the Modernization Fund, the project will significantly enhance Romania’s electricity transmission network and its interconnection with the ENTSO-E grid, improving energy security and stability in southwestern and western Romania.
