Romania: Increased electricity consumption during Q1 2021

During the first quarter of 2021 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 14.21 TWh, which is 0.5 % more compared to the same period in 2020, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 10.36 TWh, which is 2.2 % less compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 3.7 TWh, which is a 9.6 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 11.9 % amounting to some 146.7 GWh. Total electricity production reached 15.77 TWh in the first three months of the year, which is 2.6 % more compared to the same period in 2020. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 2.3 % and reached 6.06 TWh. Production in hydropower plants increased by 31.5 % to 4.51 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda decreased by 6.6 % to 2.88 TWh. Production of wind power dropped by 12.6 % compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 2.02 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 11.2 % to 294.6 GWh. Electricity exports in January-March 2021 amounted to 1.61 TWh, which is by 0.5 % less compared to the same period in 2020. At the same time electricity imports decreased by 11.1 % and amounted to 1.88 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 4,705 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 5.7 % less than in 2020. Coal production reached 733.6 million tons of oil equivalent (- 11.2 %), oil production reached 773.1 million tons of oil equivalent (- 6.8 %), while production of natural gas reached 1,904 million tons of oil equivalent (- 7.2 %).
