In the first eight months of 2020 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 35.16 TWh, which is 5.1 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 26.25 TWh, which is 7.5 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 8.56 TWh, which is a 3.5 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 9.6 % amounting to some 347.5 GWh. Total electricity production reached 37.08 TWh in the first eight months of 2020, which is 8.4 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 15.5 % and reached 12.95 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 11.7 % to 10.69 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 0.1 % to 7.36 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 8.4 % compared to January-August 2019 period, reaching 4.76 TWh. Solar power production increased by 0.5 % to 1.3 TWh. Electricity exports in the first eight months of 2020 amounted to 3.28 TWh, which is by 32.2 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 75 % and amounted to 4.82 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-August 2020 amounted to 11,791 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 12 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 1,611 million tons of oil equivalent (- 34.1 %), oil production reached 2,188 million tons of oil equivalent (- 1.6 %), while production of natural gas reached 4,745 million tons of oil equivalent (- 12.1 %).
